Historic Deerfield Residence
Historic Character.
Constructed in the late 1700s, this residence stands proudly on the historic Main Street of Old Deerfield, MA, a testament to the enduring architectural legacy of the period. The building envelope is updated to improve energy efficiency while meticulously preserving the original materials and design that define its historic character. Inside, the home has been thoughtfully remodeled to adapt it for modern living, striking a balance between contemporary comforts and preserving its historic aspects. This sensitive approach meets the demands of today’s lifestyle while honoring the building’s deep history.
Modern Reinvention.
The South and North Parlors of this historic home have been elegantly reimagined with a thoughtful fusion of modern design with traditional materials and color palettes, including contemporary furniture upholstered in rich velvets and draped with Shantung silk.. The large second-floor hallway, once a simple passageway, is now an intimate reading nook. Custom millwork bookshelves, designed to mirror the original wainscot and stair details, blend seamlessly with the historic fabric of the house, making it feel as though they’ve always been there.
Design for Energy.
As part of the extensive building envelope upgrades, we were able to adapt the third-floor attic into two inviting guest bedrooms and a cozy den, perfect for hosting family and enjoying movies and games in a relaxed, sunlit atmosphere. By finishing the space, we significantly enhanced the home’s energy performance. The project also modernized the electrical systems and introduced new energy-efficient heating and cooling, bringing the home to contemporary standards while maintaining its original charm.
New energy efficiency features, including radiant floor heating, have transformed this once drafty New England structure into a cozy, comfortable, and inviting home. Every detail was carefully considered to enhance the residents' comfort and quality of life while ensuring the longevity of this 250-year-old home.
