Food Bank of Western Mass

Design for Equitable Community.

Since 1982, the food bank has been a cornerstone in supporting the underserved and local community, seamlessly integrating national distribution with local food production. A key element of their mission is to serve as a gathering hub for community members and local food producers, fostering collaboration and connection. In the design of its new headquarters, Bonham & Douglas is able to deliver a building design that better enables the Food Bank’s commitment to our region.

Natural Elements.

The design employs a natural, inviting palette of materials and native plants along a colonnade of timbers, reminiscent of a front porch, to welcome the public into the building. The architecture emphasizes daylighting while providing sun protection, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor spaces to create a harmonious environment.

Design for Resources.

The design prominently features the use of locally sourced materials, including timbers harvested from nearby forests for the new entry canopy. This approach highlights and promotes the abundant resources available within the area, showcasing local businesses and trades. The architecture reflects a commitment to sustainability and community integration.

Balance.

The entry offers a sheltered space that bridges indoors and outdoors. It strikes a balance between office spaces and community areas while also accommodating warehousing and food network distribution functions. This thoughtful integration creates a cohesive and functional environment that serves multiple purposes.
