River Valley Coop

Interplay between metal and light.

The design of River Valley Coop creates harmony between the structure and its surroundings with a "familiar industrial" design that blends sleek, functional elements of modern steel construction with warmth and intimacy to create a welcoming space. The result is traditionally cold and utilitarian materials infused with a glowing, almost tactile quality that radiates comfort and familiarity.

Shoppers as owners/community asset.

The program accommodates food trucks, pop-up markets, and events, which adds layers of vibrancy. Having the appropriate space to support these community partnerships strengthens the local economy and enriches the diversity of offerings, turning the grocery store into a hub of community activity and commerce.

Sustainability/Power generation and emission reduction.

Energy-efficient construction shapes the entire project—from the materials chosen to the intricate details of the building envelope. The resulting structure functions as an integrated system where energy conservation and environmental stewardship are at the forefront.

Solar panels generate up to 91 megawatts of power, supplying the grocery store and contributing energy to the surrounding community. This level of energy generation transforms the building from a mere consumer of resources into a producer, supporting the neighborhood with clean, renewable power.
