Academy of Music

Design For Communities.

The revitalization of the theater space creates a dynamic venue where people of all ages can gather, whether as performers or as part of the audience. This space provides a platform for local schools and artists to showcase their talents, offering performances for the entire community. Located within walking distance of downtown Northampton, the theater serves as a cultural hub for events and special occasions, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of the arts and theater productions. Designed to accommodate both live performances and movie screenings, the space is a versatile asset to the local community.

Design For Culture.

In the late 19th century, Edward H.R. Lyman, a philanthropist and native of Northampton, envisioned a new cultural and theatrical venue for his hometown. On May 23, 1891, this vision materialized with the opening of the 800-seat Academy of Music Theatre. In 1892, the Academy was deeded to the City of Northampton, becoming the first municipally-owned theater in the United States. This historic institution has since been a cornerstone of cultural life in the community.

Downtown Northampton Icon.

Since 1891, this historic facade has heralded your arrival to the heart of downtown Northampton. Bonham & Douglas's design introduces a marquee canopy that harmoniously integrates with the existing building, creating a covered outdoor gathering space where none existed before. This new feature not only offers protection and comfort for patrons before and after events but also includes a lit marquee to advertise upcoming attractions and establish a prominent, recognizable entrance for the historic venue.
