Shelburne Springs
Design for Change.
This hillside property features 38 acres of rolling hills, forests, gardens and natural springs. Originally a stately 5 bedroom country home built in 1914, the structure had lost much of its grandeur and charm when it was transformed into an institutional-feeling nursing home in the 1930’s.

The current owner approached Bonham & Douglas to restore and modernize the property. A new program, consisting of 6 guest suites and a caretaker apartment, evokes the tradition of historic New England Inns, while finishes and furnishings draw inspiration from art deco and mid-century style to achieve a truly one-of-a-kind boutique hotel.

The full renovation included a new high-performance HVAC system and building envelope improvements. The custom ironwork banister designed with a local metalsmith, new floors and vibrant finishes, lighting and furniture breathe new life into the space. The central lounge was revitalized with a full-service bar and large central fireplace, finished with Ashfield stone, which opens onto a sunroom with classic new England views of the valley and farm across the hills.
